Hundreds come out for snowball fight

February 2, 2011

At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday more than 400 students descended upon Munn field clad in hats, gloves, scarves, jackets — and the occasional trojan helmet — to spend their day off attempting to break a world record.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the current record for largest snowball fight is 5,387 participants and took place in Taebaek City, South Korea. The Facebook page for Wednesday’s event at Munn field had more than 5,480 attending.

Though the event fell short of its desired participants, it still was a historic event for MSU, business administration freshman Evan Bachteal said.

“It’s going to be one of the biggest snowball fights in MSU history,” Bachteal said. “If there’s going to be two feet of snow on the ground you might as well make the most of it.”

Bachteal and his friends arrived at Munn an hour and a half before the event was scheduled to start in order to build a snow fort for the impending snow brawl.

Other students, such as no-preference freshman Liz Witcher, said they were a little disappointed in the turnout.

Witcher said she hoped the event would live up to its attending list on Facebook but she still ranked it among her top snowball fighting experiences.

“There are less people here than I thought would be here but the people that are here are really into it,” she said. “(It was the) best snowball fight I’ve ever had but less fun than sledding on cafeteria trays.”

Wednesday was the first time all classes were canceled at MSU since 1994, and nutritional science senior Kelly Kogelmann said this likely is the last chance she, or any one of the other students, will have this opportunity.

Kogelmann said she was excited when she first got word class was canceled and initially was in disbelief. She thought the snowball fight was the perfect way to spend her day off.

“It’s something I’ll never be able to do again, go to a 5,000 person snow fight, although it’s not nearly that much,” she said. “It was awesome to be a part of it.”

Kogelmann said she does not have much snowball fighting experience but Wednesday’s fight will go down as one of the best.

Though Bachteal and his friends never made a snow fort as they intended, he did develop a strategy for the fight.

“Don’t get hit, find as many people (as possible) running down the street and just bam, hit them in the face,” he said. “Rogue attack.”
