Fire alarm set off in response to ruptured steam pipe at Main Library

February 17, 2011

A fire alarm was set off by a ruptured steam pipe at 8:45 p.m.,
Thursday at the Main Library, East Lansing fire Capt. Jeff Alleman
said.

Because the fire alarm went off, the building was evacuated and the
East Lansing Fire Department responded, Alleman said.

Once the source of the alarm was identified, the trouble team from the
MSU Physical Plant repaired the pipe.

Once the pipe was repaired, everyone was allowed back into the building.

Psychology junior John Schwartz was at the library during the alarm
and he said the evacuation lasted for about 20 to 30 minutes.

“(The East Lansing Fire Department) handled it perfectly,” Schwartz
said. “They wanted to make sure everyone was safe, so they got everyone out of the building, ran through all the safety precautions and realized it was just steam coming of the other side of the building, leaking from the basement.”
