ASMSU Student Assembly approves merger

January 13, 2011

ASMSU’s Student Assembly voted nearly unanimously with one representative abstaining to modify the language of the constitution to reflect a merging of the Student and Academic assemblies.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

The representatives took the time to further discuss the details regarding the proposed merger of both the Academic and Student assemblies before putting it to a vote.

Academic Assembly Chairman Justin Epstein recapped Tuesday’s debate on the bill for the representatives. He said members were hesitant to make a decision without taking the time to gather information on it.

“What it came down to is that it hadn’t been discussed as much as people would have liked in terms of how it would be implemented,” he said. “The representatives need a little more time to absorb this information.”

He encouraged the representatives to remember not only their constituents, but all of the MSU student body that paid the ASMSU tax.

Noah Berger, representative for the Eli Broad College of Business, suggested the assemblies look to alternatives for the efficiency issue.

“There may be some inefficiency and excess spending,” he said. “But I don’t think this is the most effective way to improve that. There are other ways that are less extreme.”

Berger was the sole representative abstaining in another wise unanimous vote to pass the bill.

The bill now must pass a vote in the Academic Assembly on Tuesday. If the bill passes there, it will go to a special election of the student body.

Igor Shleypak, representative for James Madison College, said the approval of the constitutional change is a positive step to continue helping students.

“I think they had it right,” he said. “A big part of this organization is to provide students with services and events and the only way we can do that is to maintain a steady budget. The right way to be able to provide for the students is to give (as much of the student tax dollars back) as we possibly can.”
