East Lansing police arrested a man Saturday who was on the run after being sentenced to 80 years in prison for shooting and robbing a man in Mississippi last year.
An East Lansing police officer arrested Leo Wales, 20, for urinating in public near Quality Dairy, 1109 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing police Capt. Kim Johnson said. Wales resisted arrest and the officer used a Taser to subdue him.
Police discovered Wales was convicted on armed robbery and aggravated assault with a gun charges for a March 8, 2009, incident in Mississippi when he robbed and shot a man seven times. He was sentenced to 80 years in prison, but wasn’t present for the trial.
Johnson said police suspect Wales was staying with friends in East Lansing prior to his arrest.
Wales will remain in Ingham County Jail until the prosecutor’s office files a fugitive warrant, which will begin the formal court proceedings in his extradition back to Mississippi.
