I agree, leave olin where it is. They should move the State News headquarters out of that expensive building off campus and tuck you in the back.

You guys are ridiculous, pampered, and pompous.

I’ve had wine flu before, Lft. It usually hits on a Thursday, after a Wednesday evening at Beggar’s…

I appreciate where you are coming from because it’s frustrating to worry that your professor may not allow you to make up work if you become ill. However you seem to be either misinformed or merely unaware of the fact that MSU’s policy is that professors are not supposed to be requesting excuses in the first place. You can find that information on the MSU H1N1 FAQ site (http://special.news.msu.edu/h1n1/faq.php). Perhaps before you bash Olin for not following MSU policy, you’d do better to actually read the policy.

Also I’d like to state that I think you are misinterpreting Olin’s policy. Many students try to come in AFTER they have missed class stating they were ill and are not anymore, demanding notes. You think this does not happen but it happens all the time. I’m pretty sure that’s why the rule came about. This causes a problem because the doctors cannot verify that the patient was ever ill and it wastes their time when they can be seeing the truly ill patients.

HAHAHA Wait in LINE? I’ve had to wait in a waiting room, but definitely not a line to get into Olin. I have a feeling that getting into Olin is not like waiting for good seats in the football student section.

“This is college — if a student wants to miss class, they are well within their right to do so.”

yep, true that … and apparently you feel that if they want to demand an excuse note whether they were/are sick or not, they are also well within their right to do so.

Take yourself to the WHINE bar and get some WINE flu! LOL!

Quoted from http://special.news.msu.edu/h1n1/faq.php :

“Q: Do students need doctor verification/test results showing they have swine flu to have absences excused?

A: No. However, students do need to inform their instructors of their absence. Instructors should rely on their best judgment if students ask for special dispensation related to missing academic work because of a flu-like illness.”

Olin Doc’s don’t want to waste their time seeing students just for a sick note? Ha…I’ve got news for you, half the “patients” they see every day are a waste of time with BS symptoms or because they called home to mommy ‘cause they had a tummy ache and mommy freaked out and told them to get to Olin. Even better are the freaked out mommies that drive up from Troy or Rochester to get Timmy or Susie and bring them back home for their tummy ache and then drive them back to MSU the next day. Olin could cut their staff in half if they had a rule that you had to actually be SICK for an appointment.

Also, Olin does provide you with an appointment summary sheet every time you go to see them. This sheet lists the date and time of your visit, as well as your diagnosis. So if you go in and get diagnosed with the flu, you have verification that you can show your teacher that you did, indeed, have the flu. Given the fact that teachers are not supposed to require a doctor’s excuse from class, this should be more than sufficient.

If you feel that you have been treated unfairly with regards to the flu and your class attendance policy, contact the university’s ombudsman. That’s what we pay them the big bucks for.

I’m glad that when I was diagnosed with “influenza like illness” it was about a week or two before everyone started getting it… and Olin wrote me a note to get out of class!!
