MSU kicker named award semifinalist

By Matt Bishop (Last updated: 11/09/09 7:46pm)

Senior kicker Brett Swenson was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award on Monday, which goes to the nation’s top placekicker.

Swenson has connected on 14-of-16 field goals this season and 34-of-35 extra point attempts.

The senior had not missed a field goal since the Notre Dame game before Saturday’s game, a streak of nine attempts. His longest is 45 yards and he leads the team with 76 points scored.

This season, Swenson has rewritten MSU’s record books, setting program marks in all-time field goals, all-time points scored and all-time extra points.

Only one other Big Ten kicker, Northwestern’s Stefan Demos, was named as one of the 20 semifinalists.
