Four MSU students arrested on felony explosives charges

By Brittany Shammas (Last updated: 11/04/09 12:32am)

Four MSU freshmen have been arraigned on felony explosive charges after detonating an explosive device in a yard on the 400 block of Grove Street.

The students, Olivia M. Hudson, 18, of Okemos; Darby D. Dudley, 18, of Mason; Sasha N. Savage, 18, of Okemos; and Nikolai E. Wasielewski, 18, of Rossford, Ohio, were arrested at about 12 a.m. Monday after East Lansing police were called about an explosion on the 400 block of Grove Street, East Lansing police Chief Tom Wibert said.

The students were arrested on campus in a vehicle from which the explosive device was thrown, according to police.

Wibert said the pear-sized mortar firework caused no damage. The MSU police saw a vehicle matching the description witnesses gave and arrested the four students in the Holden Hall service area parking lot, according to a statement from MSU Police.

The four students were charged with placing explosives and causing property damage and possession of bombs with unlawful intent, the statement said. They each could face up to 20 years in prison and/or a $15,000 fine for both charges.

The statement said all suspects were arraigned on Nov. 2, before East Lansing 54-B District Court Judge Richard Ball and released after posting an unspecified bond.

These dangerous terrorists should be sent to Gitmo, where they’ll never be able to harm anyone ever again.

Never forget!

the Dudley family has always been involved when there was trouble to be found. Surprising about Sasha, but not as surprising when considering who she keeps her company with.

Sadly, this is going to follow them forever. I just hope they have learned a lesson here and decide to change their ways.

Poon Tang- you know nothing about these girls, don’t act like you do, they don’t deserve the 20 yr $15,000 dollar fines they could face.

Darbs, Sashsa, and Oliva, I hope everything works out for you three and your friend.

I don’t know the situation, but I do know three of the girls involved. And it is not my place to judge so I won’t. But its important to remember that when people make poor decisions, they need to face the consequences. I hope everything works out and that everyone involved will learn from this situation.

Honestly, they got what they deserved and will have to pay the price. Whether any of their friends commenting on this article like it or not, this will follow them for the rest of their lives. It’s too bad, but they should have considered the consequences before doing this. What’s fair is fair.

the class of 09 was really messed up at okemos. all the teachers were thrilled to get rid of them. i remember the middle school teachers saying it was the worst grade they had ever had to come through. that’s just fabulous.

and I agree with Okemos Grad 3 – they did something illegal and they will face the consequences. They are supposed to be mature college students so they should probably act like it, and possessing the explosives is illegal.

LOL. Every single post has taken a position that they “know” these are lovable kids just having fun, or evil spoiled rich kids who deserve 20 years in the slammer.

The original story is nonsense and contradictory, so not one poster her has a clue what actually happened, and from the report, neither do the police. ELPD has a 75-year history of over-reacting to college pranks, so how about waiting to find the details before passing judgment?

Then, if they caused actual destruction with intent to someone’s property, throw the book at them.

Judge Ball needs to do his job. This is absurd. 20 years? What a mockery of the CJ system. We should be protecting our citizens, not destroying lives. I feel for these kids. They made a poor decision and face 20 years of their lives because of a firework? Wow. I’d never move to Mid-Michigan… ever. Bunch of crooks running things around there.

Girls (I’m addressing it to you because I know you’re reading the comments), you should have known better. You deserve whatever is coming to you.
Believe me, I sympathize with you. I went to elementary school with one of you. I know your family. But you guys are idiots if you thought there wouldn’t be consequences.
My only question to you is, how drunk were you guys?

Nathan L-Deck

11/04/09 12:41pm

All I have to say is, although it might just be a firework, why set it off on the 400 block of Grove St, about 30 feet from the police station! Based on all of the comments I think these kids should get sent to a Jerry Springer-style bootcamp.

Think about it

11/04/09 1:46pm

Isnt it obvious what the ELPD cares about now? Their biggest source of income is from handing out MIP’s and possession charges and making kids pay into their corrupt police department. They must be real excited because now they can get even more money by taking advantage of young girls playing a prank. To all you who say well its the law and learn your lesson, how more ignorant could you be?

Nothing is going to happen to them but some community service. They got unlucky and got caught. You make mistakes and you learn from them. Both sides of this argument are acting ridiculous and to all the former Okemos students posting, please stop because you’re making us all look bad.

11/04/09 3:14pm

It is very clear that the majority of those commenting do not actually know the girls involved but rather know of them and/or hold some sort of grudge against them.

These are girls who spent their time in high school playing sports, volunteering and maintaining good grades (some are Academic All American athletes).

Please be aware that those of you saying such untrue and hateful things are guilty of breaking the law yourself.

Oh, stop over-reacting. They will probably get a misdemeanor, community service and a little bit of probation. No one is going to prison or paying $15K fine. Idiots.

It would have been a very different story if someone had gotten hurt though. They need to be taught a lesson, but its not a life-breaker.

11/04/09 4:33pm

Hahaha, some of these comments made me laugh for like 5 minutes. Of course someones gonna point the blame at the ‘corrupt police’. Your internet soapbox doesn’t really change anything so save your time. Like Tiffany said, nobodies going to jail, they might get fined, community service and a slap on the wrist. Shit like this happens every weekend, they were dumb, got caught. Also, Nate, your really creepy.
