Women's golf ties for 12th place in Division I championship

By Zack Colman (Last updated: 05/19/09 10:26pm)

The No. 21-ranked MSU women’s golf team shot a plus-19 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. on Tuesday. The Spartans were tied for 12th place at the end of the first day.

It’s the seventh time MSU has made the tournament in the last nine years, and with a little improvement the team could top a school-best 12th place finish, which happened in 2001. None of the current team’s golfers have participated in an NCAA Championship.

Freshman Lindsey Solberg and junior Laura Kueny — both of who finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio earlier this month — led the Spartans with a plus-1 and plus-2, respectively.

The Spartans tee off at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday for the second round of the four-round tournament.
