MSU football signs contracts to play Alabama, West Virginia

By Joey Nowak (Last updated: 04/27/09 10:35pm)

The MSU Athletics Department announced Monday it signed contracts for home-and-home MSU football series with Alabama and West Virginia within the next 10 years.

MSU will play West Virginia in Morgantown, W. Va., on Sept. 13, 2014, and against the Mountaineers at home on Sept. 19, 2015.

The Spartans will meet Alabama for the first time in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Sept. 3, 2016. The two teams will play in East Lansing on Sept. 2, 2017.

MSU also extended its contract with Notre Dame through the 2025 season, with two-year breaks in 2014-15 and 2020-21.

“With both Notre Dame and Alabama on the 2016 and 2017 schedules, there won’t be a team in the country that plays a tougher nonconference slate,” Athletics Director Mark Hollis said in a press release.

Though the Spartans and the Mountaineers haven’t played since 1942, the Spartans lead the all-time series 4-0.

Although MSU posts a 5-7-1 record against SEC opponents, the Spartans have never played the Crimson Tide, where former MSU head coach Nick Saban is head coach.

Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio was an assistant when Saban was at MSU.

Frank is so correct. I am a 2000 grad and have had season tickets for many years now and love to tailgate. I love the big games on campus. WVU and Bama will draw a very intense crowd on campus, I can’t wait!
