First 500 students get in free for MSU-Duke women's game Tuesday

By Joey Nowak (Last updated: 03/23/09 11:26pm)

The first 500 students to attend Tuesday’s second round women’s basketball NCAA Tournament game at Breslin Center will get in free with a valid college ID, the MSU athletics department announced Monday.

The No. 9 seed MSU women’s basketball team is taking on No. 1 seed Duke and former MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie at 7 p.m. The Spartans are coming off a 60-59 win against No. 8 seed Middle Tennessee State in the first round.

Tickets will be available for pick-up at Jenison Field House until 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Breslin Center starting at 6 p.m.

500 free tickets for the first 500 students?

The Breslin holds 15,000 people.

They should give out the remaining 8,000 EMPTY seats to MSU fans and really have some fun at the Duke game. It is a prime chance to attract new fans to women’s hoops and new season ticket holders to watch two great teams Duke it out.

Go State!

We must remember that this is NOT supposed to be a home game because it is part of the NCAA Tourney. The MSU W. Basketball Team already is top 5 in attendance in the Nation. The purpose of doing this game at different colleges that are playing in the Tourney is to increase the sales due to lack of ability to attract fans from those colleges in other areas.

So, although they intend to improve the atmosphere against a top ranked team like duke, the main priority is to maintain ticket sales.

You’re right, student, it’s not “supposed” to be a home game, but since when has that mattered? You think if the men’s team makes it to the Final Four at Ford Field it won’t be a de facto home court?

If they want to fill the Breslin Center, they should give free beer, or even money, or something like that.

EMPTY SEATS

MSU Women’s Hoops team is top 5 in the nation in attendance? GREAT! Then why is the Breslin 75% empty during their games?

All Sparty is suggesting is to take this opportunity to give away unpurchased tickets to hyper Spartan fans, to have a fun time, beat Duke, and potentially win over future ticket buyers/season ticket holders.

We’ll see how many empty seats their are, when we watch the game from home 4 blocks away from the Breslin.
