Vigil held in honor of missing MSU student

December 7, 2008

About 30 members of the MSU community braved temperatures in the teens for a candlelight vigil held to support the friends and family of missing MSU student Krista Lueth.

The vigil was organized by members of the MSU Department of Horticulture, where Lueth was heavily involved. Horticulture senior Crystal Walton, who was a member of the MSU Horticulture Club with Lueth, said the club was missing one of its most enthusiastic new members.

“We miss her, we miss her terribly,” Walton said. “We just want her to come back and participate because we’ve got competitions for her (to get ready for).”

The vigil was held at the rock on Farm Lane Sunday afternoon and was marked by speeches about Lueth by some of her professors and friends. Walton said one of Lueth’s previous ex-boyfriends said he would make sure to take care of Lueth’s beloved cat until she came back.

Lueth was last seen on Nov. 11 by her friend of eight years, Rick Stilgenbauer. He has lived in the unit below Leuth on the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing for the past five months.

Horticulture freshman Matthew Brody said he had met Lueth through the Horticulture Club’s camping trip earlier in the semester. He said he had also met Lueth’s boyfriend at the time – the two had broken up between Nov. 6 and Nov. 11. Lueth’s ex-boyfriend has been interviewed by police at least twice since her disappearance.

“He seemed like a really great guy,” Brody said.

Walton said she did her best to get involved immediately after she had heard Lueth was missing. She went to work printing of fliers and sending e-mails to members of the Horticulture Club, she said.

“It’s kind of scary because we don’t know when to take down the signs,” Walton said. “That’s what’s sad, you know, you don’t know when to stop.”

Walton said she did think Lueth will turn up, but that her disappearance is very out of character.

“She was a strong-willed woman and she knew what she wanted,” Walton said. “She had goals and was very enthusiastic about horticulture. She was very driven, she would have gone all out.”
