ASMSU will not give $35,055.08 more in funds to its Programming Board, despite complaints from the board that it was expecting to receive the funds and was already planning on using them.
Programming Board is comprised of 13 student organizations, which sponsor activities and events on campus. ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
ASMSU’s Student Assembly on Thursday voted against the bill 11-6-1. Programming Board members said they were told last semester they would receive the funds, and had begun to plan for such. But no list of future events or programs was presented to the assembly with the bill.
Assembly members were not able to yield their time to Programming Board members, as attempts were met with multiple objections. Many assembly members said the board overspent the usual allotted money from ASMSU. Programming Board receives about 20 percent of ASMSU’s $1.3 million total budget.
Alliance of Lesbian, Bi, Gay and Transgender Students member Justin Lippi said the assembly’s decision to ignore statements directly from Programming Board members was extremely unfair.
“There was no interest in listening to any of us,” Lippi said.
Board members were outraged at the assembly’s decision, as well as their accusations of overspending.
“It’s ridiculous,” said Sara Vitale, member of Great Issues and Programming Board. “They’re taking inaccurate numbers and making decisions.”
James Madison representative and Finance Committee chairperson Eric Branoff said the board’s decision to keep spending money was “irresponsible.”
“Programming Board wasn’t fiscally responsible because last night they spent money not knowing if they were getting money or not,” Branoff said.
Vice chairperson of internal affairs Garrett Faulk was confused as to why some members of Student Assembly supported the bill, considering earlier in October, the assembly voted to fail a $10,000 bill to fund a concert in association with the documentary “The Youngest Candidate.”
“All of this is coming from the same committee that has voted down a bill twice (which had) an organized budget,” he said. “They don’t deserve the money, and they shouldn’t get the money.”
