Charity event for Ronald McDonald House
Brian Leung said the idea for Union to Union just came to him.
Union to Union is a bike ride set to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan.
“I really enjoy biking, it is one of the things I like to do. It’s a really great stress relief and I thought this would really be a great way to help my community and those kids in need,” said Leung, a communication junior.
To raise money participating cyclists will collect pledges before 9 a.m. on Aug. 23 before taking off from the Union.
The route is about 60 miles, and will take up to six hours, ending at the University of Michigan’s union.
The Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan is a charity organization which provides housing for the families of severely ill kids during treatment.
“The children at the Ronald McDonald House are critically ill or need that intensive care that you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else, and I feel that it is important for people who have good health to give back to the community and give back to these children that are eventually the future,” he said.
Rebecca Reagan, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan, said they rely on fundraising efforts such as the Union to Union event as well as their own fundraising.
“It is a different event, it is one we haven’t had before,” Reagan said.
“We have a bunch of support (for the event), and they always seem to be willing to help us and help kids. I think this is a really fun and unique idea, and I think it is great that they are helping us by donating their funds.”
Leung said there are 20 riders signed up so far. He doesn’t have a particular monetary goal.
“In all honesty, all I want is as many people to come out as possible, having a great time and supporting a great cause,” Leung said.
“As of right now I don’t have a number but I’m an idealist, so I’m hoping a real big one.”
Human biology and physiology junior Cameron Marshall said he was planning on participating in the bike ride.
“I think it will be a good time to get everyone together … and raise some money,” Marshall said.
“I know Brian from high school, but not a lot of the other people doing the ride.”
