Red Wings win 11th Stanley Cup, 3-2

The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up their 11th Stanley Cup victory and first since 2002 with a thrilling 3-2 win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday at Mellon Arena.

Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after scoring 13 goals — including the game-winning goal in the third period — with 14 assists in 22 playoff games.

Zetterberg’s 13 goals tied teammate Johan Franzen for the postseason lead and his 27 points tied Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby.

After a shaky performance in Game 5, Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood came ready to play early in the game. In the second minute Petr Sykora was wide open on the doorstep, but Osgood was able to stop his shot and prevent the puck from going in the net.

Four minutes into the game Detroit received the first power-play after Kirk Maltby was tripped up at the blue line. The Wings cycled the puck and were able to get all four Penguins down low – leaving Brian Rafalski open to score on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.

With 11 minutes left in the first period, Pittsburgh had a great chance to tie the game with a 5-on-3 power-play. Detroit was barely able to kill the penalties, as Crosby just missed the net on shot he tipped from the point.

Zetterberg nearly put the Wings up 2-0 with four minutes left in the period, but the puck wasn’t sitting flat and caused him to fire a shot wide of the net.

On a power-play early in the second period, Crosby brought the puck into the zone and fell down after losing an edge. He played the puck behind the net before taking a heavy hit from Detroit defensemen Brad Stuart. Crosby skated off the ice gingerly but returned to the game shortly after.

Detroit took a 2-0 lead when Mikael Samuelsson brought the puck into the Pittsburgh zone and fired a shot at Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury was not able to control the rebound and Detroit’s Valtteri Filppula streaked to the net and slid a backhand shot through the legs of Fleury.

Osgood came up huge for Detroit on a rebound attempt by Gary Roberts with six minutes left in the period. Osgood was able to turn his stick around and get it flat on the ice to prevent Roberts from banging the puck into the right side of the net.

Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin made the score 2-1 when he capitalized on a power-play with four minutes left in the period. Malkin got the puck at the top of the right circle and ripped a slap-shot that went through Osgood’s legs. It was his first goal of the series after scoring 47 in the regular season.

Detroit caught a big break early in the third period to take a 3-1 lead. Zetterberg’s shot was partially stopped by Fleury, but the puck sat behind the goaltender and went in as Fleury sat on it, propelling it into the net.

From there, the Red Wings kept the heat on the young Penguins. Through the first 17 minutes of the period, Pittsburgh amassed only one shot.

After a Jiri Hudler penalty, Sergei Gonchar scored on the power play with 1:27 left to cut the lead to one.

Fleury remained out of the net but the Red Wings were able to hold off the rally, as Osgood put a last gasp shot wide as time expired.

“I’m at a loss for words. It’s just an unbelievable feeling,” Zetterberg said.
