Quarterback Connor Dixon to transfer

May 17, 2008

MSU quarterback Connor Dixon has been released from his football scholarship and will transfer to another school, the quarterback told The State News on Friday.

Shoulder injuries plagued Dixon, a redshirt sophomore, throughout his career at MSU and prevented him from being able compete at full strength.

But redshirt freshmen Nick Foles and Kirk Cousins pulled ahead of Dixon on head coach Mark Dantonio’s depth chart and the Spartans are reportedly interested in former Oklahoma and Lowell High School quarterback Keith Nichol, who verbally committed to MSU in 2006 before opting to sign with the Sooners.

“It was a bad time to get hurt and I couldn’t compete,” Dixon said.

Some believed Dixon was the heir apparent to the starting quarterback position when senior Brian Hoyer graduates next season.

Former head coach John L. Smith recruited Dixon from South Park High School in Pennsylvania, where he won two state titles.

Dixon said he hasn’t decided where he will transfer.
