Thomas, Davis, Baldwin selected in NFL Draft

Three former MSU football players were selected during this weekend’s NFL Draft, while a bevy of others will attempt to enter the league via free agency.

Wide receiver Devin Thomas was drafted by the Washington Redskins on Saturday, while tight end Kellen Davis and defensive end Ervin Baldwin were both snagged by the Chicago Bears in the latter rounds on Sunday.

Thomas, who most draft experts projected as a first rounder, was selected by Washington early in the second round (34th overall). He was the second receiver to come off the board — selected one spot behind former Houston wide out Donnie Avery.

Davis was a fifth round selection (158th overall) by the Bears, who selected Baldwin with their next pick, which came in the seventh round (208th overall).

Safety Nehemiah Warrick, defensive end Jonal Saint-Dic, running back Jehuu Caulcrick, and several other Spartans all went undrafted, but can still sign with NFL teams via free agency.

Of the undrafted, the one most likely to make a team is Jehuu. He fils a rather specific niche. The others are just regular players. No offense to them.

Jehuu actually has signed already, almost immediately after completion of the draft, with the Jets. He really was a great team leader, and I hope he has a long NFL career.

personally, out of the undrafted players, i think saint-dic is a much stronger pro-prospect than jehuu. jehuu relied solely on brute strength, which he won’t be able to do nearly as much at such an elevated level. saint-dic has the potential to be a great pass rusher, if he learns the game a little better.

personally, i am still distraught about devin thomas leaving early. i was really looking forward to watching him next season here at MSU.

I’ve had the pleasure to meet Jehuu. He is one class act.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nemo on an NFL squad as a special teams stand out… Coach – “Hey Nemo, run down the kick returner and level him” Nemo – “Hell yeah coach!”

SPORTS, SPORTS, SPORTS #@&*!!!!.... Tuition is rising; classes are overcrowded; the grad assistants’ union is fighting for more pay as are profs (MSU’s teacher pay is at the Big 10 bottom, right where USN&WR ranks us academically, fairly or unfairly)... All this AND YET all we get in headlines from the State News is NFL draft of Spartans, Lansing Lugnuts (about whom, I reiterate from before, who the hell cares!), and anything else sports related. The SN even puts the sports click-on before editorials.; the only Big 10 (and major public) U. news paper where sports is so friggin’ prominent, always… why? Cause to the SN, MSU = Michigan Sports University.

At one of the major academic institutions in the country, nice to see you’ve got your priorities straight, guys!!!!!

Hey Townsend, sports provide a lot of revenue, they are fun to watch, and they provide an outlet for school pride. If the majority of staff at the SN enjoys writing about and following our sports teams/players then who cares. Its not our fault you were always the last kid in gym class to be picked to participate. Besides, the SN has covered all the topics you mentioned.

Success in life should be measured through Athletic achievement. I’d rather read about baseball before the GEU any day.

04/28/08 @ 8:05pm

Success should be measured by athletic achievement? You are an idiot. If our world were to be run by athletes we would still be living in caves and hunting for food. Success is defined by great achievements in general. Are you saying that Bill Gates isn’t as successful as a NFL player with the education level of a high school graduate? I can guarantee that I will be more successful than about 90% of college athletes because the players that don’t go onto the professional level end up with some garbage degree in something such as Liberal Arts or Advertising.

What?
04/28/08 @ 9:28pm

The fact that you just called Advertising a garbage degree shows your complete ignorance. Do a little research before you waste your time posting on SN forums. By the way, tuition increases were a front page story last week. Did you know the SN staff is not in the office this week due to finals? No one in the newsroom writing so yea, you can expect shorter, less in depth articles.

What kind of slander is Get Real and Townsend spewing? How is the fact that the GEU might go on strike and there will be a tuition increase big time news? There have been tuition increases and GEU strike talks every year for the last 7, no big surprise. However, tomorrow when I go to my job interview for an engineering/development position, you bet I’ll be talking about sports, specifically MSU sports. Sports provide a central point of pride for MSU, there is value in that. Sure some athletes don’t truly pursue academic endevors, but a majority of them do. The most common degree for athletes is sociology, and that is not a cake major. Maybe I should contact Drew Naymick after he gets his PhD. in finance to do my financial planning. I bet Chris Hill might be able to help too, he received over a 3.5 in a finance, I bet he is good with money. For your reference Get Real and Townsend, since you probably don’t know who those guys are, they were star athletes and scholars at MSU, but you were probably too busy protesting some policy to take notice in the many great things at MSU. I’ll be at MSU this weekend for my sisters graduation, and being a proud alumni myself, I can’t wait to hear the fight song play as she crosses the stage…

GO GREEN!!!

Ha, my friend is an advertising major and he tells me all the time that his major is a joke. He drinks almost every night, never has to study, and still gets 4.0s in all of his classes. Don’t try to defend advertising as being a hard degree, my 6 year old sister could get a degree in advertising.

04/28/08 @ 10:26pm

MSU AZ ALUM, you just mentioned another joke majors so thank you for backing up my statements. Finance is for the slackers that can’t hack it in accounting. However, you are not seeing my point. I was arguing that success is not measured by athletic achievement. Don’t get me wrong, I love MSU sports but to say that success is measured only by athletic ability is wrong. If you truly define success in that way, you are as dumb as Cindy.

You’re talking to a sports fanatic; a Spartan fanatic who’s traveled to several cities around the country to follow our basketball, and sometimes, even, our tortured football program (that hopefully Mark Dantonio is bringing up); so it’s not like I don’t appreciate sports. But the SN — and sometimes MSU almus (as I am a proud one, myself) — lack perspective. The SN ridiculous coverage is only part of the symptom. Who cares about the Lansing Lugnuts? A relatively small percentage of MSU students are even from Lansing, and even the ones who are, I’m sure, care much more about the Tigers, Pistons or Red Wings. So why do the Lugnuts headline most the SN front pages? What agenda is the SN trying to push? What about international issues? What about academic issues? What about that arts? Why can’t more of those issues headline? Why is it that we’re the only serious major academic U that has it’s alumni club HQ’d in the football stadium, while all other schools that have an alumni building: U-M, Maryland, Ohio State, UVa and others, have free-standing alumni buildings in the academic area of campus? Our alumni magazine usually has like 6-10 paged dedicated to sports. What does UM only have a page or 2, yet they have traditionally dominated us in sports, even basketball, until recent decades… It’s called perspective. As avid a fan as I am, I didn’t come to MSU because of Spartan sports; they weren’t even on my High School radar.

I’ve had the displeasure of meeting Thomas. He fits every arrogant and moronic athlete stereotype that you can think of.

04/29/08 @ 2:02am

My roommates pre-med, drinks every day and has a near 4.0. So what? Damn, so arrogant and clearly a fan of U-M policies. Wolverine maybe? This article was just reporting on a current event that happened this weekend that MSU students may find interesting. Chill out. Few would claim that sports are more important than all the other issues you mentioned. If you want to gripe about something with TSN I would talk about the still on going coverage of cedarfest. Everyone over reacts over stupid stuff like that, in a way much like some on this forum.

Wow, what an explosion over a SMALL article about the NFL draft where some ex-MSU football stars are going to the pros and potentionally make a bigger name for MSU.

Don’t forget what MSU grad caught the game winning touchdown of the super bowl this year to upset the Patriots. It’ll be Thomas in the future, and you can say: I watched him play when I was in College.

I’m happy for the guys, but if you people just want to get on here and bitch about what major is hard, or what the SN should be spending more of their time on – write an actual letter to the editor. It shouldn’t take me a half hour to scroll past your asinine comments that have nothing to do with the article.

Thanks. After reading some of these comments, I’m crossing MSU off my list of colleges to attend. You’re so full of yourselves.

“It’ll be Thomas in the future, and you can say: I watched him play when I was in College.”

-You need to find something in your life with some meaning. Ooh wow, I’m sure everyone will bow down and worship you because you watched some idiot catch a football in college. Especially when you consider the large percentage of criminals that have played for MSU and the NFL.

04/30/08 @ 10:09am

Steve. Brother. After working 3 years in the stadium, and having one year to watch in the stands, it was an awesome spectacle to watch the “idiot” Devin Thomas this past year (Heck, the whole team for that matter). If you don’t like sports, that’s fine. Just don’t comment and make the damn assumption that if someone says they enjoyed watching an NFL talent now and in the future, that they’re “narrow minded” for making the comment on a SPORTS COLUMN. Bash if someone makes a stupid comment on an article for a global issue.

Props to all the players who got selected, they made my Saturday’s enjoyable at MSU.

Ham, Plax didn’t graduate.

What is narrow minded...?
05/02/08 @ 4:14am

...How about going onto a sports article and bitching about your dislike of sports.

Q: WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU PAID FOR THE STATE NEWS?
A: NEVER!

So I would suggest you shut the hell up when moaning about what is covered. Obviously you don’t, but the majority of students that read it on campus look for several things:
1) News That Directly Effects Them (which is maybe 2 or 3 stories a month?)
2) Spartan Sports Coverage
3) Police Briefs and other random interesting university events

If you don’t like the distribution of coverage on articles, go BUY a news paper that might better suit your wants

Boris Rodrigo Silva-Vea
05/02/08 @ 6:07am

Hey what is narrow minded. You actually pay for the state news before each semester. You must never looked at your billing statement before. By the way you have to pay for it.

What is Narrow Minded, who are you referring too man?

Steve
05/06/08 @ 12:19am

What is narrow minded…?

You are the epitome of idiot. You apparently do not read your tuition bill and are one of those morons that just pays the bill without looking at it. You PAY FOR THE STATE NEWS EVERY SEMESTER YOU ARE HERE.
