Suton honored by Big Ten

Junior center Goran Suton nailed his first collegiate 3-pointer Sunday afternoon against Indiana, snapping an 0-for-15 attempt record.

Could it have been karma?

Suton was named the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, after averaging 15.5 points and 12 rebounds in his past two games against ranked Wisconsin and Indiana.

Suton racked up 14 points and 15 rebounds against No. 10 Wisconsin on Feb. 28 and finished with 17 points and nine rebounds Sunday, as well as tying a career-high with four steals against the Hoosiers.

He shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the field on the week, as Suton now averages 8.8 points and 8.1 rebounds — ranking second in the conference in rebounding.

Suton is the third Spartan to obtain the award this season — sophomore forward Raymar Morgan and senior guard Drew Neitzel did the same on Nov. 19 and Jan. 7, respectively.

Goran Suton? Seriously? He is the best player on our team? I never would have been able to predict this.

HELLO RAYMAR. You could be one of the best players in the Big Ten. Start playing like it dawg.

That picture of Suton you have there… it almost has a Zoolander-like quality to it. (I approve!)

And congrats Suton!

I vote Mike Saelim for “Post of the Year” in the State News.

I wish the State News would stop making a big deal about his made 3 pointer…don’t give him a big head…he needs to stop shooting it period…he’s not a guard…hope he does continue to play big though, his boarding this season has been spectacular.

Spectacular rebounding? Did you just say this? State always kills people on the boards, so Suton should lead the league, not be second. He could be a 20pt/14rb guy each and every night, if he only had better basic skills. Like a drop-step or lets get even more basic “a left hand”. Izzo gets these guys in shape and tough, but he may need to go to the drawing board with his bigs.
Now I will rant a bit….......For the future of recruiting, lets put the idea away that we will find numerous 6’10” to 7 footers with no skill at all (IBOK anyone?) and lets get guys that are athletes and 6’8”, who play like they are 7ft tall. (hell lets get bangers) Like a Carl Landry esk player. We need to get back to getting nasty players down low, to compliment our Kalin’s, Durrell’s and Allen’s. Don’t make those guys bang, get some Antonio Smith’s to protect them and do the rough stuff. Naymick is a tough guy, but lacks ability to back it up (love the guy but he has 2 left feet)

whoa—- ok I’m done

Final thought:
Tommy, continue to run and play a smaller line-up. Teams can’t guard us when we have 4 scores on the floor. (Neitzel,Lucas,Allen,Morgan) Make them adjust to us and not the other way around. We could be a team thats really tough!!!!

Jason is right. 0-15 says you shouldn’t be shooting from that range. But he keeps chucking them up there anyway. That’s what happens when you go after European players – they all think they can shoot.

If you’ve watched Suton’s 3-point attempts, they only come when the team leaves him alone outside the arc with the clock under 10. He knows his driving is not strong and he can make the 18 footers rather consistently so he takes a shot… quit hating.

I’m sick of everyone ripping on Suton. If Izzo used him more the team would have more success. Just look at his numbers in some of the bigger games:

Missouri: 17 pts (7-13) - 9 rebounds NC St: 17 pts (8-14) - 12 rebounds BYU: 12 pts (5-10) - 13 rebounds Texas: 12 pts (6-9) - 9 rebounds Purdue: 12 pts (5-7) - 10 rebounds Purdue: 8 pts (4-7) – 7 rebounds
@Wisconsin: 14 pts (6-10) – 15 rebounds
Indiana: 17 pts (6-7) – 9 rebounds

I don’t think these numbers are anything to complain about. He might miss the occasional layup or make a weak play once in awhile, but overall he is doing pretty good.

In the losses to UCLA and Indiana, Suton did not take one shot. Maybe those games could’ve turned out differently if Izzo had used him, especially when UCLA toughened up on defense at the end of the game. Maybe if they’d use Suton more that would open things up for the rest of the players? Maybe then they wouldn’t have to pass the ball around the perimeter for 30 seconds and then take a contested jump shot? Look at the success they had in first half against Wisconsin using Suton. Maybe if they’d kept using him they could’ve kept the game close and had a chance to win.

“I wish the State News would stop making a big deal about his made 3 pointer…don’t give him a big head…he needs to stop shooting it period…he’s not a guard…”

AJ Granger and Morris Peterson weren’t guards either… I’m not saying let Suton shoot from outside all the time, just that using the “he’s not a guard” excuse isn’t a good justification.

Naymick definitely does not have two feet…he’s probably been one of the best defenders we’ve had in years, he is a legitimate threat down low which people respect…I agree herzog looks like another low skiil 7 footer like Ibok but Delvin Roe and Draymond green are definitely not they both look like big bruising highly talented PF

left feet…maybe he does have two feet

Goran is horrible, I do not know why you MSU slappy’s think he is anything better then a big slug. The guy is tall, thats about it. I totally agree with DJ Coat, he could be a 20 and 14 kinda guy but the talent just isnt there. Along with Ibok [laughable] and Herzog [The human skelton]

First of all Goran shows some promise on the offensive end when he just reacts and doesn’t think.

Goran kills us with his help defense on screens at the top of the key. He never gets through the screens and worse yet he never puts a body on anyone once he fails to get over the screen.

I think Goran is the most talented big man we have but there is a lot more potential that could be utilized.
