Volleyball looks to improve Big Ten standing

October 11, 2007

In hopes of reviving their lackluster Big Ten season thus far, the MSU volleyball team (10-8 overall, 1-5 Big Ten) has been practicing with a new motto: daily growth.

“One of the biggest things we are learning is that in conference, where you need to battle night in and night out, you need to go in and take matches,” MSU head coach Cathy George said. “You are not given anything. So we’re developing more of a hardened attitude toward that.”

“We’re recognizing areas that we’ve had weaknesses in and we are working very hard to improve those areas.”

George said that while she is pleased with the fact that the team is learning every day and working hard on improving, she is not pleased with the record.

“I can’t be pleased with (the record). I know none of us are,” she said.

The team’s next Big Ten matchup takes place Friday on the road against Indiana (12-6, 3-3).

“(Indiana) is much improved since last year,” George said. “They have a new coaching staff, a couple of transfers and foreign players. And they’ve just been playing really well.”

George is looking to go into Friday’s matchup with sheer aggressiveness and desire.

“We look to go in there and take it,” George said. “We need to go in totally aggressive, totally with one thing in mind — play hard and play to win.”

While the team recognizes that it will need as many victories as possible for a bid to the NCAA Tournament, George is confident that they can do it.

“Good things can happen but we must keep our eye on the prize and keep pushing hard.”

While the future of the season has yet to present itself, the team’s daily growth motto will remain in the atmosphere and minds of the team.

“I’m looking forward to the team’s continual grow and passion,” George said. “I’m looking for them to play hard and improve with each day.

“Practice is a great opportunity for each individual to improve their game and when you have a goal each day, and you come in to grow, then you get better.”

The team returns to East Lansing on Friday, Oct. 19 against Iowa and also plays Saturday, Oct. 20 against Minnesota.
