Former MSU wrestler Franklin Gomez was ousted from his first Olympics competition Saturday after dropping two consecutive matches.
Gomez, who wrestled for the Spartans from 2005-08, competed for the Puerto Rican team in the 60 kg freestyle wrestling event.
His first loss came at the hands of Russia’s Besik Kudukhov, who was a finalist for the gold medal in the event. Gomez beat Kudukhov previously at the Grand Prix of Germany in June, according to a release from the MSU athletics department.
Since Kudukhov was a gold medal finalist, Gomez qualified for the repechage round, where he eventually lost to India’s Yogeshawr Dutt in the bronze medal match.
