The MSU field hockey team came up short in a gritty, hard-fought 1-0 loss to Boston College in its season opener in Orono, Maine.
The Eagles scored their only goal with 3:50 remaining in the first half, when BC’s Virginia Muma tapped in a rebound.
The loss, while disappointing, does provide a number of positives. For one, MSU was able to hang right with 17th ranked Boston College during the match.
Junior goalkeeper Molly Cassidy had a strong performance in goal, tallying six saves on the afternoon. Sophomore forwards Abby Barker and Allie Ahern recorded MSU’s only two shots, one going to each.
The Spartans have Saturday off, but will take on Maine Sunday before returning to East Lansing.
