Spartan Roundup: Men's Soccer advances to the Elite Eight

This is your weekly Spartan roundup in case you missed anything, as the football team remains at No. 16 in the latest college football rankings. The men’s basketball team moves to No. 3 in the AP poll.

Men’s soccer advances to the Elite Eight 

Last Saturday night, the Spartans won 2-1 in a victory over Western Michigan that will send them to the Elite Eight. Junior forward Hunter Barone and senior defender Jimmy Fiscus led the way with one goal. The Spartans and Broncos combined for a total of 25 fouls in a physical environment.

The Spartans will travel to Bloomington, Indiana where they will face fellow Big Ten rival No. 2-seeded Indiana this Friday at 7 p.m.

Women’s volleyball gets set for NCAA tournament

Last Friday, MSU fell to No. 16 Purdue with a score of 1-3, but bounced backed Saturday on their season finale with a 3-1 victory over Indiana. The Spartans concluded their season with a 21-8 overall record and finished fourth with a 14-6 record in the Big Ten.

The Spartans earned themselves the only at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Volleyball Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska.This will mark the program’s 20th overall NCAA Tournament appearance, and its seventh consecutive at-large bid. This is the second-longest streak in school history. The team will face No. 25 Missouri State in the first round this Friday.

Men’s and Women’s diving team send 10 total Spartans to USA Winter Nationals

On Nov. 29 to Dec. 2, 10 Spartans will head to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the USA Winter Nationals. Representing from the men’s side will be Nick Leshok, Phillip Meffert, Scott Piper, Michael Schwers and Payton Woods. Along the women’s side will be Cathryn Armstrong, Racheal Bukowski, Ellie Roche, Ana Sortland and Erin Szara.

These individuals finished with impressive performances at the Northwestern TYR Invitational, as both sides finished second. 

Women’s softball acquires three new faces for 2019

Head coach Jacquie Joseph announced that there will be three new incoming freshmen to the roster for the 2019 season. Charla Echols from Newnan, Georgia, Abigail Joseph from Goodrich, Michigan and McKenzie Meech from Riverside, California, will be the incoming freshmen. 

Women’s Field Hockey player earns season honor

This past Monday for the second straight time, senior Simone Vagnoni was named to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-West Region Second Team. Vagnoni also received All-Big Ten First-Team honors for the second straight season. Vagnoni started all 19 games, recorded six goals, and two assists throughout the season.
