MSU will host the 2018 Big Ten Conference Wrestling Championships at the Breslin Center on March 3-4, the university announced in a press release Tuesday.

“It’s exciting anytime you can host an event of this caliber,” head coach Roger Chandler said in the release. “Many say it’s tougher than the NCAA Championships in many ways. It’s great to promote and feature our sport on our own campus. I think the most exciting thing is that our guys get to be home, compete at home and compete in front of their own fans. In many ways, that gives them extra incentive as they move forward through the year.”

The Spartans will continue to host their regular-season matches at Jenison Field House.

It marks the first time since 2007 that the Spartans will host the conference tournament.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve hosted, and I think it’s great to feature our program at home on campus as we take our program in a new direction,” Chandler said. “We’re excited about the gains we made last year and we look forward to building off that.”

The Spartans are coming off a 10th-place finish at the B1G Championships in Chandler’s first season as head coach, which was their highest finish since placing 10th in 2012.

The team lost just three seniors from last year’s squad and showed improvement in Chandler’s first year at the helm.

MSU’s 38.5 points is the highest point total the Spartans have recorded since they registered 41.5 in 2012, and is nearly as many points as the last three years' combined totals. During the regular season, MSU finished with a 5-11 record, going 1-8 in Big Ten play.
