MSU men's golfers Charlie Netzel and Sam Weatherhead have been named Division I PING All-Midwest Region golfers by the Golf Coaches Association of America Saturday.
This is the second consecutive season the program had two players earn All-Region honors, MSU Athletic Communications announced in a press release. Josh Heinze and Mitch Rutledge earned the honor last season.
Despite an injury-shortened season, Weatherhead was ranked No. 31 by Golfstat. The Grand Rapids, Michigan native shot a season-low 66 for a third-place finish at the Bearcat Invitational and placed a season-best second place at the Gopher Invitational in September.
Netzel won the Colleton River Collegiate in March and shot a career-low 205 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. A Western Springs, Illinois native, Netzel ended the season with back-to-back top-10 finishes and averaged a 72.89 — the lowest of any Spartan who competed in over six events — and the sixth-lowest in program history.
Netzel and Weatherhead also took home All-Big Ten honors this season as the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row — a feat reached by the program for the first time since the 2008-09 seasons.
