MSU Police have written 48,486 tickets since Jan. 1
The MSU Police Department Parking Office has written 48,486 tickets since Jan. 1, Capt. Doug Monette said.
The tickets are a mixture of warnings, withdrawn and paid, Monette said.
According to the MSUPD website, an expired meter violation is $15 and the price of other violations ranges depending on the ticket. If the ticket is not paid within seven days of the issue date, there is a $10 late fee added.
For the 2016 calendar year, MSUPD issued 108,585 parking tickets, although some were warnings or withdrawn and others were paid, Monette said.
The East Lansing Police Department has issued 23,212 tickets since Sept. 1, 2016, according to reports obtained by The State News.
ELPD Lt. Steve Gonzalez did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
MSUPD Deputy Director of the Management Services Bureau John Prush said the parking office is looking into ways to make parking at residence halls a better experience for visitors.
He said they are considering using the Spot On app, which allows users to pay for parking via app instead of at a pay-by-plate location or a booth. This method may be implemented to replace the parking passes that can be bought for visitors.
