Broad Underground Film Series gives students entertainment
The Broad Underground Film Series will feature another night of films on Jan. 20 starting at 7 p.m. at The Robin Theater in REO Town Lansing, 1105 S. Washington Ave.
The film series is a collaboration between MSU’s Film Studies Program, the Department of English and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum.
The series is free for students. The Friday series will explore three experimental films, including: "The Octopus" by Jean Painlevé, "Spiral Jetty" by Robert Smithson and "Grosse Fatigue" by Camille Henrot.
Director of the Film Studies Program Joshua Yumibe has been helping program the series with the Broad Museum. Yumibe said this is the second year of the series.
“It is geared towards showing ... experimental cinema films that don’t normally show in big theaters but are more like artists films,” Yumibe said. “It is something a lot of people don’t really know about. The films tend to be smaller, tend to be shorter and tend to kind of experiment with the very nature of the moving image.”
Yumibe said this year is not focused on any particular theme. He collaborates with professors and faculty from Art, Art History and Design, English and other departments. The series on Jan. 20 will be curated by Department of Art, Art History and Design assistant professor Lily Woodruff.
“We also want (the students) to just kind of look at stuff that has been produced over the last many years that is not your normal film,” Yumibe said. “We want to immerse them in the history of the moving image and all of its varieties while kind of having students come up with the possible films in the future.”
Woodruff said this is her first year picking films for the series.
“These works I am showing are not random, they are classics,” Woodruff said. “As a mode of transferring information the quickness of that moving image is extremely compelling. It has a way of capturing people’s attention and capturing their imagination.”
