Broad Art Museum hosts annual ArachnoBROADia event

October 28, 2016

For the past few years, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum has hosted ArachnoBROADia, an event for the children of East Lansing to celebrate Halloween on campus.

Brian McLean, manager of museum programs, said, “It’s just a way for us to open our doors to the community during the Halloween season and invite the kids in to trick-or-treat and take part in some fun activities that we have.”

The event features games such as “the spider toss, where you can win prizes,” McLean said. “We’re also playing with clay and encouraging kids and giving them the parts to make little monsters out of clay. We’re doing button making as well. And then the bug house, which is definitely a favorite.”

McLean said that planning events like this helps to open the doors of the museum to the community.

“We’re always sort of looking for ways to just open our doors to the public and invite people in to just have a good time,” said McLean.

He also said that he enjoys these events because of the effect that it has on the kids that come and participate.

“Anytime you see a kid getting his hands on clay or different art-making materials, it’s always awesome to see because it just encourages that creativity. So being able to provide that is, we feel, a huge benefit to the kids,” McLean said.

McLean added that he hopes people come back next year for the event.

“Look forward to it again next year, maybe being even bigger, better, and maybe a little spookier,” McLean said.
