The former Taco Bell at 565 E. Grand River Ave. will see progress with construction starting this week.

The building, owned by Cron Management, LLC, was demolished Tuesday.

The project is slated to be a five-story mixed-use building. The first floor will feature retail and the rest of the floors will be one, two and three bedroom apartments, Director of Planning, Building and Development Tim Dempsey said.

The retail space will be less than 7,000 square feet and the apartments will be 36,000 square feet for a total of 36 units, he said.

Cron Management could not be reached for comment.

Dempsey said the city does not classify this as a large project, compared to some projects like the ones north of downtown.

“It’s an important project because it’s getting rid of ... the blighted old Taco Bell building,” he said.

He said demolition should take approximately one day, and from there the crew has to sort the rubble into recyclables and trash.
