MSU celebrates 161st birthday

February 12, 2016

Just two days away from Valentine’s Day, MSU is celebrating a different day — the university's birthday.

MSU was founded as the first higher learning institution to teach scientific agriculture in the United States 161 years ago today. After going through numerous name changes through the years, the university finally settled on Michigan State University.

Just last year, MSU changed the name of their official fight song to “Victory For MSU” along with honoring the song’s 100th anniversary.

In the past, MSU celebrated its 150th birthday by inaugurating their 20th and current president, Lou Anna K. Simon. Simon has been a part of the university for decades now, earning her doctorate degree from MSU in 1974.

With about 50,000 students enrolled today, MSU is one of the largest colleges in the nation with one of the largest campuses.
