MSU head coach Tom Izzo said at his press conference Tuesday that his senior captain Denzel Valentine will be back in the starting lineup either Thursday against Iowa or Sunday when MSU travels to Wisconsin. Valentine's return to the starting lineup means one thing for sure, a move back to the bench for junior guard Eron Harris

Before Valentine's injury, Harris was playing just above 16 minutes per game. But during Valentine's absence, Harris saw his playing time spike, as he played an average of 25 minutes per game.

"Yeah, I talked to Eron about it since the season started, I’ll get a better idea today (Tuesday)," Izzo said. "The game plan is (Valentine) will move back into the starting lineup. Whether it will be this game or one more game, I don’t know yet."

Izzo said the move will not affect Harris' minutes much, and rightfully so, as Harris averaged 16.8 points per game in his five games as a starter.

"I don’t think it will affect Eron’s minutes at all," Izzo said.

Izzo said one of the biggest reasons he doesn't plan to reduce Harris' minutes is the high level of defense he has been playing this season.

"Right now I think Eron is playing the best defense he’s played since he’s been here," Izzo said. "His offense, he’s been very consistent… I think he’ll play the same amount of minutes, or close to it, it will just be in different ways."

Harris' said it has been a journey over his time at MSU to become a well-rounded player and find his role on this MSU team.

"I’m trying to be an all-around player, I’ve got the ability to be an all-around player, I’m trying to do that. If I can do that I can probably take my team to a higher level," Harris said. "... In the beginning I was a little rusty, I was a little not understanding of the system, so now I’m doing a little bit better job of that and I’m feeling great."

Valentine said he thinks his health is at about 90 to 95 percent. Valentine said he and the coaches will make a decision on his starting status for the Iowa game as they get closer to game time, but Valentine said he will be ready to go no matter what role Izzo asks him to play.

"We'll probably figure that out come game time," Valentine said. "Either way, I'm fine with my role. I'm not going to change how I play, (Izzo's) not going to change how he coaches."

No. 5 MSU (16-1, 3-1) will take on the No. 16 Iowa Hawkeyes (12-3, 3-0) Thursday at 7 p.m. at Breslin on ESPN in a rematch of their Dec. 29, 2015 matchup in Iowa City, Iowa where the Hawkeyes handed MSU its only loss of the season 83-70.
