Sorority Alpha Xi Delta to get chapter house

January 29, 2016

A few weeks into the fall semester, hundreds of women choose to go through the Panhellenic Council’s formal sorority recruitment and find their metaphorical home.

Next fall, MSU's Beta Theta chapter of Alpha Xi Delta sorority will finally get its actual home at 855 Grove St. this fall.

Haley Schepis, public relations vice president for the chapter and hospitality business sophomore, said the sorority has been trying to get a house since it recolonized in 2013.

“It is very exciting for us just because we were currently the only sorority that didn’t have a house,” Schepis said. “We finally feel like we are officially here to stay.”

Schepis said Alpha Xi Delta has about 160 members. The house will be the new hub for a variety of meetings or events, which had previously been done out of the Union

“We couldn’t build a house, there’s really nowhere to do that,” Schepis said. “To be able to find that location was pretty much luck.”

Gotko said the sorority has found its perfect fit.

Shelby Fritts, social media chair for the chapter and psychology junior, said getting a house is a physical symbol of the sorority’s hard work.

“We put a lot of work into our chapter and philanthropy,” Fritts said. “It kinda feels like this is the last installation.”

Fritts said it is a celebration for all of Greek life at MSU.

“Michigan State hasn’t seen a sorority get a new house in a while,” Fritts said. “It is exciting for us and for Greek life at MSU. Our chapter is going to continue to grow, living out of our own house.”

Audrey Gotko, president of the chapter and packaging senior, said having a house will bring the members even closer together than before.

“I have always thought we had a strong sisterhood because we have to put in more effort to see each other,” Gotko said. “I am really proud of how far this chapter has gone. This was the last thing the founding class had to do to be legitimate on campus. It’s cool to have the final thing in place.”
