MSU Police unveil new app allowing users to pay for parking online

November 24, 2015

MSU Police unveiled a new parking app on Monday allowing users in a limited number of ramps to pay for parking online, according to an MSU police statement.

The app, called Spot On, is available for the Shaw Lane Ramp (Ramp 1, Lot 51) the Trowbridge Road Ramp (Ramp 5, Lot 102) and the Grand River Avenue Ramp (Ramp 6, Lot 103). Users can download it from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Spot On uses a "pay by plate" system where parking officials will have access to an individual's license plate number attached to how much time they have remaining.

For the three ramps currently using the system, they have been transitioning for years, Deputy Police Chief John Prush said. After transitioning from parking meters to solar powered meters accepting credit cards, in addition to installing kiosks in the ramps that also worked on a "pay by plate" system.

"The app was just an extension to be able to pay for that instead of stopping at the kiosks," Prush said. "Once you've parked your car, if it's snowing or it's cold, right from your car you could buy your time on the app instead of stopping at the kiosks."

Hopefully, he said, more ramps would be added to the app by next spring.

Once parked, users will have to select the ramp, provide their license plate and choose the length of time they will park before paying over with a card over, the statement read.
