Shilique Calhoun earns Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors

September 28, 2015

The Big Ten has announced fifth-year senior defensive end Shilique Calhoun as its co-defensive player of the week after a career performance in the Spartans’ 30-10 win over Central Michigan.

Calhoun tied his career high for both sacks in a game with 2.5 and tackles for loss with three. His season high six total tackles was one shy of his career high set in 2013 against Minnesota, according to a Spartan Athletics release. Calhoun also blocked a field goal in the first quarter, which was the Spartans’ second blocked kick of the game.

“What we saw from Shilique against Central Michigan is the dominant performance that we expect out of him, and most importantly, what he expects out of himself,” MSU defensive line coach Ron Burton said in the release. “The team was in need of a spark and his timely sacks and blocked field goal really changed the complexion of the game.”

Calhoun is now No. 6 all-time on the MSU sack list with a total of 21. He also now has 34 career tackles for loss, No. 9 all-time at MSU.

This is Calhoun’s second time being named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. His first honor came in 2013 against South Florida, according to the release.

Calhoun is now the fourth Spartan to be recognized as a player of the week this season. Junior linebacker Riley Bullough was honored for his performance against Oregon, freshman running back LJ Scott against Oregon and senior wide receiver Aaron Burbridge against Air Force.

Penn State senior defensive tackle Anthony Zettel was honored alongside Calhoun after a seven tackle, 2.5 tackle for loss performance against San Diego State.

Central Michigan head coach John Bonamego acknowledged in his post-game conference the pressure Calhoun put on his team.

“The guy is a great player and a freakish athlete. It comes down to players making plays,” Bonamego said.

The Spartans will open Big Ten play on Saturday when Purdue (1-3) comes to Spartan Stadium for a noon game.
