An East Lansing police officer is recovering from minor injuries today after an accident at 1:20 a.m. on Friday in the parking lot of Hobby Lobby in Meridian Township, according to an ELDP statement.

ELPD was assisting with the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run and after the run was over a number of runners and officers had gathered in the Hobby Lobby parking lot.

The officer involved in the accident was going to move a patrol vehicle in order to provide space for an RV that was leaving. The RV driver did not see the officer and as he was turning, he pinned the officer between the RV and the patrol vehicle.

A group of police cadets managed to lift the back of the patrol vehicle to free the injured officer.

He was treated at the scene and transported to Sparrow Hospital, but was not admitted. 34-years-old and a nine year veteran of ELPD, he is recovering from injury at home.

Meridian Township is investigating the accident.
