The scams involve a caller claiming there is a warrant out for arrest on the person they are calling.

They say they must pay fines immediately over the phone or face arrest.

Both police departments are saying these are frauds, especially when the caller demands the alleged fine to be paid with a Green Dot or other pre-paid card.

ELPD and MSU police stress they do not call to demand the payment of fines by phones.

Scams of this nature are long running and The State News reported on them both during last spring semester as well as over the summer.

Other reported scams involved the caller claiming they were with the FBI or IRS and saying there was some tax error.

The non-emergency phone number for ELPD is (517) 351-4220 and MSU police’s is (517) 355-2221 where victims can call to report an incident.
