MSU Police warn community of phone scammers

June 22, 2015

MSU Police are alerting community members in East Lansing of illegal telephone scams.

According to a press release from the MSU Police, several East Lansing community members have reported callers claiming to be police officers and telling people they have a warrant out for their arrest for tax evasion with the FBI and IRS. It is said that if the amount requested is unpaid, the person can be sent to prison for seven months.

In addition to this, the caller ID is disguised as a law enforcement phone number, so it appears the callers are calling from a call center.

To avoid being a victim a scam, it is suggested to go to https://www.onguardonline.gov/topics/avoid-scamshttp://ww.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0076-phone-scams or https://www.stopfraud.gov.
