City Council makes plans for MSU, townships to join Greater Lansing Taxi Authority

June 24, 2015

Discussion about taxi cab regulation took place at the East Lansing City Council‘s June 23 meeting.

The Council amended an agreement with the municipal partnership agreement for the authority for the licensing and regulations of taxicab companies and drivers which could lead to more consistent rules and regulations for taxicabs throughout the region.

The objective when creating the Greater Lansing Taxi Authority, according to Mayor Nathan Triplett, was to set consistent regulations for cab companies and drivers in the cities of Lansing and East Lansing, on the campus of MSU and in the townships Meridian, Delhi, Delta, and Lansing.

With all parties on board, it will make the process for cab drivers in the area to get registered shorter, but also eliminate issues of inconsistency such as cab drivers having licenses to operate in the city of East Lansing or Lansing, but not the other that have occurred in the past.

“What you really need is one uniform set of rules for the whole region because that’s what the taxi market looks like. It’s regional not jurisdictional,” said Triplett.

Triplett also said this amendment will improve the quality and professionalism of cabs in the region while making them more accessible during day-time hours.

The next step in the process, according to Triplett, is Lansing’s Committee of the Whole to approve the amendment at its next meeting then all of the new members will formally be added to the agreement. All of the jurisdictions involved will then repel their individual ordinances and will adopt new ordinances that say it is unlawful to operate a cab in their community without a license from the Greater Lansing Taxi Authority.

MSU will also be added to the GLTA as a non-voting member of the board.

The work session also discussed a number of potential construction projects.

Public hearings for the project at 1301 and 1307 East Grand River Avenue and 116-132 Spartan Avenue to construct a 6-story mixed-use building as well a for a project at the property of 565 E. Grand River Avenue to construct a five-story mixed-use building were set for the July 7 city council meeting. Both of the hearings for the projects have potential of gaining approval from council at this meeting.
