North Neighborhood collaborated last Thursday to bring the largest spring carnival celebration the neighborhood has ever had and, despite the cold, plenty of people came all bundled up to play games, eat popcorn, and win prizes last week.

Biochemistry senior Onyinye Nnamdi-Nwosu, president of Snyder-Phillips hall government, said spring carnival is a tradition for the residence hall, but they wanted to make the event better this year by inviting the West Circle hall government to participate and by adding new attractions.

“We just kinda wanted to make it bigger, since North (Neighborhood) is like…a dot on Michigan State’s map,” zoology junior Sydney Brancaleon , the president of Mason-Abbot hall government, said, adding they wanted it to be a bigger event than north has ever done before.

Computer science and RCAH sophomore Trever Daniels said the event was better compared to last year.

“I was definitely enthralled by all the extra stops that they decided to pull out, like a Ferris-wheel, inflatable track-run thing, there’s a bunch of cool stuff here,” Daniels said.

Brancaleon said they cut out some old attractions this year and brought many new ones to the event, such as carnival games, a photo-booth and a mini Ferris-wheel.

Nnamdi-Nwosu said this is the first event all of North Neighborhood has put on together, and they all came up with ideas to figure out different activities to do.

The carnival included an inflatable race course, water pong, hay-rides to West Circle and free giveaways.

Daniels said his favorite game involved trying to pick up a milk jug with a hoop, and he enjoyed all the fun games, glow sticks, and free handouts.

Some of the games involved throwing little sacks or footballs, but another game had attendees milking a fake cow, and there was a strongman game to test students strength.

RCAH and child development freshman Karen Baldwin said she was most excited for the inflatable course, and both she and Daniels agree the free popcorn was a great addition.

They’ve been planning the event all semester, Nnamdi-Nwosu said, to ensure people show up and have a good time.

Baldwin said she saw posters for the event and decided to go, and she hopes North Neighborhood has more events like this.

“It’s just to bring people together and encourage residents to be part of the community, and to get them involved and show them what the college has to offer,” Nnamdi-Nwosu said. Brancaleon adds the event is to help students de-stress before finals and show off all the different North Neighborhood groups.

Baldwin definitely used the event as a way to relax, saying she took as study break to come to the carnival with her sister and their friends.

Chilly weather aside, spring carnival seemed to provide students with a fun time and a distraction form the upcoming whirlwind of finals.
