Kappa Kappa Gamma hosting book drive to support children's literacy

March 26, 2015

This month, Kappa Kappa Gamma has been hosting a book drive to support their national philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental.

As the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the U.S., Reading is Fundamental aims to spark a passion for reading in every child. The organization wants to create a nation in which every underprivileged child has access to books and a desire to learn.

Kappa Kappa Gamma is helping the cause by donating all the books collected this month to the local Boys and Girls Club.

Human biology sophomore Allie Hogan said this book drive is a tradition for Kappa Kappa Gamma.

“Personally, I know me and my sisters all find it really rewarding to go hang out with the kids from the Boys and Girls Club and give them our donated books,” Hogan said.

This Friday books will be collected from every sorority and fraternity that participated in hopes that last year’s count of 960 will be beaten.

For Hogan, the most important part of the book drive is interacting with the kids.

“It feels good to give back to the community and know that we’re doing something positive,” Hogan said.

After the books have been retrieved, the sisters of Kappa Kappa Gamma will go to the Boys and Girls Club and do activities with the children such as a reading circle.

Afterwards, the kids get to keep the donated books.

“We hope it give them something to read and inspires them to read more books,” Hogan said.

She said she enjoys being able to provide resources that the kids might not otherwise have.
