Over the weekend MSU's women’s golf placed 13 out of 15 teams at the Allstate Sugar Bowl intercollegiate Championship in New Orleans.

“We did not perform up to our expectations,” Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said.

The team ended day one of the tournament in 12th place. In this first round they shot a 22-over-par 310, the team ended the second round on Monday shooting a 24-over-par 312.

The Spartans ended the tournament on Tuesday with a 54-hole total of 936.

“The scores were not reflective of our capabilities,” Slobodnik-Stoll said.

The tournament was hosted by Tulane and it included 10 teams that were ranked in the Golfweek Top 50.

Women’s golf team member Gabby Yurik did considerably well, leading Michigan State in 21st place.

Yurik shot a 10-over-par 226, tying for 21st place.

Lindsey McPherson placed second best amongst MSU's team, finishing the tournament at 22-over 238 to tie for 59th place.

The spring season has just begun for the Woman’s golf team, but they have already set high goals for themselves.

The coach said that the team strives every year to win at the Big Ten Championships and go on to compete in the NCAA tournaments.

“[We’re] working on developing the best student athletes that we can have at Michigan State,” Slobodnik-Stoll said.

Though the end of this tournament marks about a month off for the team, they will not be lounging around in this time.

Slobodnik-Stoll said the team is going down to Florida over spring break to get some outdoor practice.

“Practicing on grass is going to be very beneficial for the team,” Slobodnik-Stoll said.

The women’s golf team will head to South Carolina on March 23 for Briar’s Creek Invitational.
