Women's golf begins season in California

Women’s golf shot a 304 in their first round of the season, at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. The Spartans placed 14th in the elite 16-team field, which features 10 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25.Second round saw the Spartans card a 25-over-par 309, and retain their 14th spot.

On their final day in the elite tournament the Spartans placed 16th with a 925 (304-309-312), and boasted many successful individual scores.

Junior Alison Knowles owned her first meet as a Spartan, and carded a 74 (37-37) to lead MSU. Knowles ended the day tied for 28th place on the individual leaderboard, a victorious debut for her Spartan career.

The next day Knowles led MSU with three birdies on the day, but still dropped to the 30 spot on the individual leaderboard, with an 8-over 150. The drop was short lived though as Knowles rounded out her first tournament as a Spartan tied for 24th place, with a final-round score of 73 and 10-over-par 223 (74-76-73).

Knowles played her first two seasons at Louisiana-Monroe, where she was named the Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Year. With a stroke average of 73.03, Knowles never finished a tournament outside of the top 12. Knowles transferred to MSU, but had to sit out the fall season.

Senior Lindsey McPherson started the tournament solid with a 77 on the first day, and led MSU on the second day with a 4-over 75. McPherson had two birdies and carded a 4-over-par 75 in Monday's second round.

Junior Gabby Yurik tied for 43rd with a 5-over 76 on Sunday. Yurik shot a 5-over 40 on the front nine, but bounced back with an even-par 36 on the back nine, including two birdies and five pars. The next day, Yurik tiedfor 53rd place, only one shot behind McPherson at 11-over 153 (76-77).

On Tuesday, Yurick (76-77-78) and McPherson (77-75-79) finished tied for 62nd place with an 18-over 231.

In the third round, freshman Sarah Burnham carded the fourth counting score for MSU with 82, and finished at 245 (82-81-82). Senior Trisha Witherby shot a 247 (77-83-87). Freshman Jacqueline Setas competed as an individual, and collected a 252 (86-82-84).

Women’s golf will travel to New Orleans, La. to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship February 22-24.
