Trying to decide what to wear for an internship interview can be a challenge. Sometimes the line between professional and stylish can seem a little blurry. If you want to appear professional, but still youthful, follow these tips:

Women

Blazers are a classic for a reason — they’re simple, but chic.

1. You can purchase a blazer at any Target store, with some priced as low as $24.48 that come in a variety of sizes ranging from 2 to 18. Blazers also come in a variety of colors — black, pink, gazelle brown, heather gray and olive brown. The clean, crisp lines of this blazer will make you appear professional, but not dowdy.

2. Considering it’s winter, chances are you’ll be reaching for a pair of pants instead of a skirt or dress. Pants can be purchased for about $22 at Kohl’s, with sizes ranging from 0 to 13. The high waist will both flatter and slim, and the button detailing on the belt loops offers a bit of unique flair.

3. Adding a fun print to your professional attire can be rather tricky — it makes your outfit more appealing, but can also sometimes make you seem juvenile.

Tops can be bought at Kohl’s for about $15 that have fun with color but not obnoxiously so. You can select various sizes ranging from extra small to extra large.

4. High heels are the epitome of professionalism and femininity. But sometimes they can be a literal pain. Wear whatever type of heel you’re comfortable with — three inches will give you a nice lift, but you can choose a lower heel height as well to achieve the perfect look for your professional environment.

If you aren’t comfortable in heels, dressy flats are also an acceptable shoe for the workplace.

Men

1. Suit jackets can cause a major dent in your wallet.

However, Target has jackets priced at about $20 each.

Sharp lines will present you as both sophisticated and stylish, and sizes range from 42 regular to 48 regular with a choice of color including black and gray.

It’s worth noting, though, the jacket will need to be dry-cleaned.

2. Button-downs, priced at $17.99 at Kohl’s, are a classic piece you’re sure to wear time and time again.

It can be worn casually, but it’s also great for professional attire. The collar flares are spread a bit for wider tie knots. Sizes range from small to extra extra large and the colors include white, black, gray and dark blue.

3. Guys can have a lot of fun picking out a tie.

There are plenty of colors, styles and patterns to choose from, and because ties are inherently professional, you can pick a fun print and not have to worry too much about coming across as immature.

Ties can be picked up at Target for about $20.

4. Suit pants are both formal and flattering, with a tailored waistline falling slightly above your hips. They can be found at Target for about $30.

A variety of sizes are offered, ranging from 29x30 to 40x32, though they are best suited to a slim build. Also, dry cleaning is a necessity.

5. Shoes can make or break your outfit — you want to make sure what you’re wearing is both comfortable and sophisticated.

Dress shoes can be purchased at Target for about $35.

Fashion Tips

1. Avoid super bright colors. It’s OK to have a colorful top or tie, but avoid anything that’s neon. You want to wear mostly dark or neutral colors to present a professional appearance.

2. Wear comfortable clothes. You want to look formal and sophisticated, but you also should appear relaxed. If your clothes feel uncomfortable, that tensity will be reflected in your mannerisms and posture.

3. Dress modestly. Because you’ll be in a professional environment, you’ll obviously want to look professional, and part of that involves wearing modest clothes. Make sure you’re not showing a lot of skin and avoid breaking out your 6-inch, flashy stilettos.
