There will be no love lost Friday when the MSU women’s gymnastics team faces off against rival U-M in their alumni meet, held at the Jenison Field House in East Lansing.

Last year, MSU posted its highest team score on the uneven bars and balance beam during a meet against Michigan, but it wasn’t enough to earn them the win. MSU fell to Michigan 193.900–196.800.

This followed a long string of losses to University of Michigan, many by three points or more. In a sport that is often decided by a hundredth of a point, these constant losses to Michigan don’t bode well for their upcoming meet.

After a 3.6 point loss at Penn State last weekend, head coach Kathie Klages said “We have two home meets coming up next weekend and we have the opportunity to get back on track! We are anxious to see how this team responds!"

In the first four meets of 2015, the Spartans have recorded 27 career highs, including sophomore Kira Frederick with 9.800 on bars, sophomore Elena Lagoski with 9.875 on vault, and Freshman Tori Huehn with 9.800 on beam in their meet against Penn State.

MSU is ranked fifth in the Big Ten Conference, while Michigan holds the top spot, with no losses yet. Overall, MSU has 5 wins and 3 losses, and is 2-2 in the Big Ten Conference.

“The goal this weekend is to hit 24 of 24 routines,” said Klages. “That’s what we have been focusing on and trying to do all season. I’m really pleased with the team in the fact that we haven’t had to count a fall so far this year."

Klages is MSU’s longest tenured coach, and in her 25th season as head coach of the MSU gymnastics program. Klages holds a winning record in 21 out of her 25 seasons.

The MSU vs. U of M meet will begin at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 13. MSU will host Pittsburgh in the annual Autism Awareness Meet two day later, Sunday, February 15 at 2:00 pm.
