Chemical odors prompt brief evacuation at Cyclotron Thursday

February 24, 2015

MSU police and the East Lansing Fire Department responded to an emergency at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory just after noon on Tuesday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Employees were sealing chemicals which were contained under a ventilation hood. It created an odor and raised the alarm, at which point MSU police was notified.

"There were 10 (employees) who evacuated," McGlothian-Taylor said. "One person was transported to Sparrow Hospital for precautionary measures only."

East Lansing Fire Department and Environmental Health and Safety continued to vent and monitor the area before people were allowed to return to the building. Four officers from MSU police responded along with the "Trouble Truck" from Infrastructure Planning and Facilities.

Officials at the Cyclotron declined to comment, instead directing all inquiries to MSU police.
