MSU Choral Union auditions will be held for the spring 2015 season on Jan. 14 and Jan. 21 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 165 of the Communication Arts and Sciences Building.
David Rayl, the director of choral programs and conductor of the Choral Union, said this particular group is a community-based ensemble. This means that, while MSU students are involved, the Choral Union accepts a wide variety of people from the East Lansing community.
"Mostly I talk to people about their previous experiences to get a feel for their goals and what they've done in the past," Rayl said.
He said those who audition will simply run through some vocal warm-ups and then sing "The Star Spangled Banner."
"The intention isn't to keep people out, it's just to make sure they know what they're getting into and that this is a good match for them," Rayl said.
He said he aims to diffuse any trepidation about the audition — his intent is to include anyone who is interested in singing some great choral music.
"I am happy to include people who don't have a lot of experience and who have fairly ordinary voices," Rayl said.
Rayl said he is always interested in attracting younger people, as many of the people have been in the group for many years. He said he wants to bring in new people as well as people from different backgrounds.
"It's always good to bring in new blood and new people who are younger and enthusiastic about choral singing," Rayl said.
The MSU Choral Union hold auditions every semester, so there are multiple occasions for students and those in the community to join.
