November 19, 2014

The women’s volleyball team was able to win back-to-back games for the first time in a month.

MSU (15-13 overall, 8-9 Big Ten) defeated Northwestern (15-13 overall, 5-12 Big Ten), 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-9, 25-13) in Evanston, Ill on Wednesday night.

It was the first time the Spartans had won back-to-back games since Oct. 17 and 18.

MSU stormed out to a 7-1 advantage in the first set, thanks to two Northwestern errors.

The Spartans cruised from there winning the set, 25-15.

The second set was much tighter and went into extra points.

MSU and Northwestern traded points as the score was tied on nine different occasions.

A Northwestern ball handling error tied the score at 25 in the second set but that would be as close as the Spartans would get.

The Wildcats took the second set, 27-25.

MSU regrouped from there and won the third and fourth sets in relatively easy fashion.

The Spartans were able to hold the Wildcats to 21 points total in the last two sets combined.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig led the team with 14 kills but had just a .089 hitting percentage, her third lowest clip of the season.

Sophomore opposite hitter Allyssah Fitterer and senior outside hitter Taylor Galloway joined Reining in double digit kills, with 12 and 10 respectively.

Galloway also had 17 digs to notch her third double-double of the season.

Defensively, senior libero and team co-captain Kori Moster had game high 27 kills.

The Spartans return to Jenison Field House for a matchup with Rutgers (7-23 overall, 0-17 Big Ten) on Saturday at 7p.m.

Rutgers lost to Purdue (22-7 overall, 12-5 Big Ten) on Wednesday night in straight sets, 0-3 (16-25, 21-25, 17-25).

MSU swept Rutgers on Oct. 18, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-21).
