On senior night, MSU volleyball sweeps Purdue for first win over top-25 opponent

November 26, 2014

The volleyball team saved its best performance for the last home game of the regular season.

MSU (17-13 overall, 10-9 Big Ten) swept No. 19 Purdue (22-9 overall, 12-7 Big Ten), 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) on senior night at Jenison Field House.

It was the Spartans first win against a top 25 opponent this season.

Senior outside hitter Taylor Galloway led the way for the Spartans, posting 10 kills on a .391 hitting percentage.

Defensive specialist Ryian Hubbard, middle blocker Jazmine White and libero Kori Moster all saw playing time on senior night as well.

Purdue took four of the first five points in the opening set.

However, MSU was able to draw the score even with a 4-0 run of its own.

The Boilermakers were able to regain its lead and looked like they would close out the set, as they led 23-20.

But sophomore outside hitter Chloe Reinig had other plans as she spearheaded a 5-0 run with three kills to win the set, 25-23.

Reinig finished with five digs and 10 kills, while hitting at a .231 clip.

MSU carried its late success in the first set into the second set, taking an early 6-2 lead.

From there, MSU kept Purdue out of striking distance, winning the set, 25-19.

Like the second set, the Spartans jumped all over the Boilermakers early, sprinting to a 7-2 lead.

The night was dedicated to the seniors but it was the freshmen, who sealed the game for MSU.

Freshman setter Rachel Minarick found freshman middle blocker Alyssa Garvelink for the game-clinching kill on match point in the third set.

MSU closes out the regular season on Friday night in Iowa City, Iowa against the Iowa Hawkeyes (14-16 overall, 6-13 Big Ten).

Iowa defeated Maryland in five sets on Wednesday night, 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 15-25, 25-17, 17-15).

MSU swept Iowa last month, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-18) at Jenison Field House.
