Student hosting fundraiser at Rick's

September 2, 2014

Many East Lansing restaurants are known for collaborating with groups to raise money for a cause.

Now included among those restaurants is the popular bar Rick’s American Cafe — Rick's, for short.

On Wednesday night from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., applied engineering junior Kyle Sims is hosting a fundraiser for Ele’s Place, a center designated to helping grieving children and families after suffering a loss.

Sims is the philanthropy chair for the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, but said the event and fraternity are not connected.

He added the fundraiser is his own general approach to philanthropy, and decided upon Rick’s as the location because it’s close to students.

“I thought anything that’s not too time consuming would get more people involved,” Sims said.

Rick’s will have their half-off drink specials on Wednesday and every $500 raised will sponsor one child at Ele’s Place for a year.

Although Sims is not personally connected to Ele’s Place, he said he wanted to pick an organization in the community as opposed to a national one.

“I wanted to pick somewhere that is local that people could go to and give their time,” Sims said.
