National poetry slam artists to visit campus

September 30, 2014

Student poetry lovers will have the chance to meet two people who do it for a living on campus this weekend.

The University Activities Board has invited two distinguished poetry slam artists to perform at  "A Night of Poetry" on Friday in the main lounge of the Union from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The event will feature Michigan native T. Miller, along with Ebony Stewart from Austin, Texas.

In 2007, T. Miller won the title of Grand Slam Champion, and she has been a member of three National Poetry Slam teams in the past. According to her bio, she is currently recognized as the fifth best female slam poet in the world.

Stewart is a spoken word artist and was voted Slam Artist of the Year in 2012. In Austin, she is recognized as the only female to be crowned Slam Champion three times.

The free event will offer cupcakes from the MSU Bakery and cider from Bigby Coffee.

UAB Events Director Mary Northfell said students will have the opportunity to showcase their own poetry during the open mic night that will conclude the performance.

"It's just going to be a really low-key, fun event," Northfell said.
