MSU volunteer organization recruiting at the Rock

September 15, 2014

MSU’s chapter of the Pangea Educational Development organization will be at the Rock on Farm Lane today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. raising awareness and recruiting interested students.

According to the organization’s website, they are a “non-profit organization dedicated to providing essential resources to schools and creating sustainable education programs that ensure the well-being of students around the world.”

“We volunteer a lot in Lansing; and, during the summers, we go to Africa to help like build schools and make things better for them over there,” zoology and preveterinary junior Allyson Shaker, one of the group’s co-presidents, said.

MSU’s Pangea Educational Development chapter has also partnered with Waverly Middle School, mentoring 7th and 8th grade students who may be potential dropouts when they reach high school with the intent of instilling confidence and motivation in them to continue their education.

Shaker said students do not have to be an education major to join.

At their weekly 8 p.m. Wednesday meetings, members discuss potential volunteer opportunities, how to get noticed on campus, and fundraising options, Shaker said.

“It’s pretty fun,” Shaker said. “It’s kind of like a little family.”
