MSU joins "It's On Us" campaign against sexual assault

September 22, 2014

MSU is joining a new White House campaign in the hopes of educating students about sexual assault, this time specifically focusing on what bystanders can do to intervene if they see an act of sexual violence in progress.

"It’s On Us,” which launched Friday, will be communicated to students on campus via social media. MSU’s Title IX Coordinator Paulette Granberry Russell said the campaign will compliment educational initiatives MSU already has in place, such as ”No Excuse for Sexual Assault,” which was launched in January 2013.

“When we were aware the White House was intending to launch a public awareness campaign, quite frankly we saw it as an easy fit, a continuation of the education campaigns already in place at MSU,” she said. “It’s not just the victims’ responsibility to be the voice. There’s no excuse and it’s on us. (The message is) clear.”

“It’s On Us,” will specifically focus on bystander intervention among men, a specificity not found in previous campaigns.

Granberry Russell said while generalizations can’t be made about men in instances of sexual violence, “it’s not just on the parents to caution a young daughter,” and men need to be incorporated into anti-assault efforts in order to make a change.

Multiple campaigns and educational initiatives regarding sexual assault and harassment have been introduced over the years by MSU, which currently has multiple separate federal investigations pending against the university for its handling of sexual assault cases under Title IX.

In addition to online learning programs on sexual violence, MSU is in the process of creating a new sexual misconduct policy and worked to establish a university task force to handle sexual assault and relationship violence.
